Coding with Pupils

Because of the high speed developement of the technology, coding is in our curriculum now. Learning and teaching coding seems difficult. More then that it is very hard to decide how to learn what to teach. Many coding languages, many programs, many teaching games… Frontend and backend sides. It seems very complicated. However it is the future is in coding.

But actually it is not like as it seems. Coding is very easy but very serious thing. It is not a game even just a dot change all the meaning.

Coding is learnt by code writing.

We can’t teach how to write by using keyboards. Pupils have to write on their own. They have to use pencil, notebook. Writing is also a learning method. Pupils can learn coding by writing, too.

Learning program writing seems boring and complicated. When we look at a programming text, we see hundreds of complex words and symbol indexes. This image, which is very complicated to us, actually consists of many abbreviations and seeing all of these abbreviations at the same time gives us that sense. However, the situation is the opposite. Let’s explain with an example;

“Seven plus seven is equal to fourteen”

If we code this sentence with math, it becomes more easy and understandable

7+7=14

This is like coding. We use some symbols, shortcuts and commands instead to tell what we want in a sentence.

And the result is “Math make our lives easier.” 🙂 (as a teacher saying)

So coding does as well…

We go on to talk about it Activity1  and Activity2
